Minesite Drainage Assessment Group (MDAG)TM
Introduction
Grain 3.0©,TM is a handy and time-saving spreadsheet for calculating the geometric grain-surface area for a sample with a range of grain sizes. We have used this for case studies in our book, Environmental Geochemistry of Minesite Drainage: Practical Theory and Case Studies, and for grain-surface areas in the International Kinetic Database (IKD©,TM).
Grain 3.0 already contains common sieve/mesh sizes and diameters.
You can change the diameters at any time, or add new sieve sizes. If you do
not use a sieve that is already in Grain 3.0, it will be properly ignored in the
calculations (see example below).

How to Obtain a Copy of Grain 3.0
Grain 3.0 is now offered as a free download. When using it, please reference it as Grain 3.0 from MDAG Publishing at www.mdag.com/grain30.html. Grain 3.0 currently exists as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet containing one sheet for the calculations and one sheet for instructions on how to use, adjust, and expand it for your own samples and sieve sizes.
